A SPORTING team from Pleckgate did the school proud when they competed in the Town Sports Competition at Witton Park.
For Year 10 student Aleena it was not just the taking part as she won the 1500m race by a clear margin.
She said: “I did not think I was going to win, but I had lapped one of the other competitors and I finished the race 200m in front of the nearest challenger.
“Running is something I enjoy doing but I don’t take it seriously so I was delighted to win.”
PE teacher Mr Haworth said: “We took strong boys’ and girls’ teams and had a great day.
The pupils did the school proud with their behaviour and attitude as well as their performances on the track and field.
The stand out performance of the whole event was Aleena winning the 1500m by a considerable distance. The Pleckgate students were cheering for their team-mate and when she won there were joyous scenes.”
School sports ambassador Zaynab came 2nd in the 800m and 3rd in the 200m.
“I was in the lead for two laps in the 800m,” she said. “Then in the last 100m another runner sprinted away. When I think back I think I could have done it but I did make an improvement on last year when I was 5th.”
As a sports ambassador Zaynab has been involved in leading indoor athletics sessions in school for feeder primary school pupils in Years 5 and 6.
High jumper Kameran, from Year 10, equalled his 5th place of last year by jumping a distance of 1.45m, but he said competition was tougher as he faced taller boys from older year groups.
Year 8 student Markus was 1st in his heat for the 200m and then came a very respectable 5th in the final.
He said: “I knew most of the people I was up against because I had met them last year when we all competed in the 100m. I was surprised and pleased to get 3rd place.”
Mr Haworth added: “I would like to say well done to the athletes who took part and many thanks to the staff involved from the Sport and Health faculty.”
