A team of trainers visited Pleckgate and delivered a Heartstart course where they instructed 37 Year 10 Health and Social Care students on how to deal with someone who was not breathing, had a serious bleed or was choking.

Aleena, 15, said: “We watched some videos and they presented us with the different scenarios.

“We learnt how to give CPR and I now know what to do. If I was ever faced with the situation I am sure I would feel more confident to help someone.”

Head of Sport and Health Faculty Mrs Pallett said: “Health and Social Care is a very popular subject and we have 150 students in Years 9, 10 and 11 studying it.”

As part of their studies the Year 10 students also had a practical lesson on what life is like to be a student with a visual impairment.

Abbi, 15, said: “We had to put on these goggles and we could only see out of a tiny hole in the front.”

Bethany, 15, added: “We had to direct the person wearing the goggles around the school grounds and had to describe where they were walking, the pavement surface and whether there were any steps or hazards.

“It was hard but it makes you realise what you take for granted and don’t even think about.100_2644

“When I was on holiday I have previously helped a visually impaired lady to find her way to the toilets so it helped me to understand this task.”
